The TL;DR
Shopify’s Summer ‘26 Editions showcase goes live tomorrow, June 17 — 150+ updates and a lot of AI headlines. Exciting, but most of it is reported, not confirmed, and none of it has a deadline. The one thing that does — Shopify Scripts stop running June 30 — only affects Plus stores (more on that below). Watch the keynote, pilot the shiny stuff, panic about nothing.
The release, and the honest read
Tomorrow Shopify holds its Summer ‘26 Editions event — the twice-a-year drop where it ships everything at once. Coverage this week pegs it at 150+ updates, headlined by native AI merchandising (AI-sorted collections, predictive cross-sell built into admin), Checkout Components going generally available on Plus, and native A/B testing for themes and checkout.
If you run a store, that sounds like a lot is about to change. Here’s the honest part: most of those AI features are still “reported,” not confirmed. As of this writing the official Editions page isn’t even published yet — the feature names and the “lifts conversion X%” numbers come from secondary coverage and vendor case studies, not Shopify’s own docs. They’re directional. They are not promises you should re-plan your month around.
What’s actually confirmed and dated is short:
Scripts stop executing June 30 — Plus stores only (more below).
Storefront API 2026-07 becomes the stable version July 1 — only matters if you run a headless or custom storefront.
So the calm move tomorrow: watch the keynote, screenshot what looks useful, and pilot the native AI tools on one collection before you cancel any app you’re paying for. Native tools tend to launch broad and shallow; your paid app may still win on the metrics that move revenue. Let your own numbers decide, not the launch-day demo.
Urgent — but only if you’re on Plus: Scripts die June 30
Quick gate first, because the coverage on this has been needlessly scary: Shopify Scripts only ever existed on Shopify Plus. If you’re on Basic, Shopify, or Advanced, you never had Scripts — skip this section with a clear conscience. No, your discounts are not about to break.
If you are on Plus and you use the Script Editor for custom discounts, shipping rules, or payment logic: those Scripts stop executing entirely on June 30, 2026. No grace period, no extension — Shopify has said so directly. Editing has been locked since April 15, so the only path left is migrating each one to a Shopify Function (or a public app that does the same job). That’s two weeks from today. To check, open the Script Editor app in your admin — if there are active scripts in there, each needs a Function equivalent live before the 30th.
One more for everyone, Plus or not: there’s a separate checkout-extensibility deadline of August 26 if you’ve customized your checkout. That’s a slower-moving follow-up, not this month’s fire — but worth a note in your calendar now so it doesn’t sneak up.
The AnvilHQ take: a perfect job for an AI assistant
Migrating a Script to a Function used to mean reading docs for an afternoon. It doesn’t anymore. Shopify ships a Dev MCP / AI toolkit that lets an AI coding tool (Claude, Cursor, whatever you use) pull straight from Shopify’s live API schemas and docs, generate valid Function code, and validate it before you deploy. For a solo operator with two weeks on the clock, that’s the difference between “I’ll call an agency” and “I did it Saturday night.”
If you’ve got Scripts to move, this is exactly the kind of tedious, well-documented task AI is genuinely good at — and a low-risk place to try it. We’ll show the full build in an upcoming video.
A stat to keep the AI hype in perspective
AI shopping is real and growing fast: AI-referred traffic to U.S. retail jumped roughly 800% year-over-year around Black Friday 2025, and those AI-referred visitors converted meaningfully higher than traffic from regular search.
And yet — AI still drives under 1% of total store sessions for most merchants, and an estimated 70% of it gets misfiled as “direct” in standard Google Analytics setups. So it’s simultaneously the fastest-growing channel and tiny and badly measured. Translation: worth watching, not worth betting the quarter on. (Same energy as tomorrow’s keynote.)
Reported figures, aggregated from third-party 2026 commerce data — directional, not audited.
New video today
Our second build is live: the AI Customer Support Agent — a full step-by-step walkthrough of wiring a mailhook to a Shopify order lookup to a Claude-drafted reply to approve-and-send, for pennies per email. It’s the “stop letting support emails sit for six hours” workflow, built start to finish on a real dev store.
