Happy Tuesday.

Two weeks ago Shopify shipped its biggest drop of the year — the Summer ‘26 “Everywhere” Edition, 150+ updates — and the headline most of the coverage ran with is that your store can now sell inside AI assistants. ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google’s AI Mode, the Gemini app. No app to install, no integration to build, no extra transaction fee beyond your normal processing rate.

That part is real, and it’s worth understanding. Whether it’s worth changing anything this week is a different question. Let’s take both honestly.

What actually turned on

Shopify calls it Agentic Storefronts, and it’s managed right from your admin. In Shopify’s own words, your products “become discoverable in ChatGPT by default” — no separate integrations, no apps, no extra fees. Orders flow back into your admin tagged with the AI channel they came from, and you stay the merchant of record. You keep the customer, the data, and your own checkout customizations.

So the setup cost to you is roughly zero, because Shopify already did it. If you’re on Shopify, you’re in these channels right now whether you’ve thought about it or not.

The honest part: the buyers aren’t there yet

Here’s what the breathless coverage leaves out. Six months into the agentic-commerce era, the actual buying is a rounding error.

Independent reads this spring put AI-driven sessions at well under 1% of store traffic — some trackers say under 0.2%. And the marquee launch stumbled: OpenAI’s first “Instant Checkout” rollout reportedly went live with fewer than 30 of Shopify’s millions of merchants before OpenAI pulled the feature back in March to rework it into dedicated in-chat apps. (Reported, not Shopify-confirmed — but the direction is clear, and even Forrester flagged the leader “pulling back.”)

The optimistic counter-stat is that the people who do arrive via AI convert better — some reports say AI-referred shoppers are ~38% more likely to buy, and the channel spikes hard at the holidays (~$3B of US Black Friday 2025 sales were attributed to AI agents, per reported figures). That’s promising. But great conversion on a tiny sliver of traffic is still a tiny sliver.

Our take: This is infrastructure that’s ahead of behavior. You don’t need to re-plan your quarter around it, and you definitely don’t need to buy anything to “get into AI shopping” — anyone selling you that is selling you something Shopify already gave you for free. The one move that actually matters is unglamorous: clean product data. Agents pick products from structured attributes — accurate titles, clear specs, real-time inventory and pricing. The store with the tidy catalog wins the agent’s pick. So if you want to spend ten minutes on this, spend it auditing your top 20 products’ titles and attributes, confirm Agentic Storefronts is on in your admin, and then get back to the work that pays this month. Watch the channel at the holidays; that’s when it’ll actually be worth your attention.

Last call: Shopify Scripts go dark June 30

If you’re on Shopify Plus and still run Scripts (custom checkout, shipping, or payment logic), this is your final SIGNAL before the deadline. Per Shopify’s own docs, all Scripts stop functioning on June 30, 2026 — a hard date, no extension. Editing has already been locked since April 15, so existing Scripts are running on borrowed time.

There’s no automatic conversion. The logic has to be rebuilt as Shopify Functions, and you’ll want it live with a day or two of buffer for hotfixes — meaning realistically this week. Shopify’s migration guide maps each Script type to its Function equivalent (line-item to Discounts/Cart Transform, shipping to Delivery Customization, payment to Payment Customization).

Not on Plus? Scripts was always a Plus-only feature, so this almost certainly doesn’t touch you. Skip it with a clear conscience.

One next step

Open your Shopify admin, confirm Agentic Storefronts is on, then glance at your five best-selling products and ask: would an AI agent understand exactly what these are from the title and specs alone? If yes, you’re done. If no, that’s your ten-minute job this week — and it’s the same work that helps you in regular search, too.

That’s the whole game with AI commerce right now: low effort, get your house in order, don’t overspend attention on a channel that hasn’t earned it yet.

See you next Tuesday.
